By Train
If you think about travelling to Cologne by train, the place for you to look at is the website of the Deutsche Bahn.
Getting around in Cologne
In general, the cheapest and best way to get around in Cologne is by Stadtbahn (“U-Bahn”) and, in some cases, by bus. You can download a map of the Stadtbahn-network here and a map of the bus-network here.
You can buy your ticket either at a Stadtbahn stop, if there is a ticket machine there, or else directly in the Stadtbahn or the bus.
For more information on public transport in Cologne you may want to visit the website of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe. Unfortunately, though, the page is available in German only.

Once you have entered the yard at Kosterstraße 79 you will find signs showing you the way to the Repräsentationssaal.
Accomodation
The University of Cologne has agreements with a number of Hotels around the city that offer special prices to guests of the University. You can download the list of the relevant hotels from here. If you want to book a room in any of these hotels, please contact them directly and tell them that you will be attending a conference organized by the University of Cologne and that you want to take advantage of the special conditions for guests of the University. If you experience any problem with this procedure, please let us know and we will sort things out.
There are also a fair number of hostels and backpacker’s in Cologne. You can easily find their websites by googling for “hostel + cologne”.
In addition, some of the organizers are willing to host a couple of graduate students at their own places. So if you don’t mind sleeping on a sleeping pad or a couch, please feel free to contact us and we will see whether we can offer you a place to stay.
